BIG EYE FRY INTRO

A lot of small baitfish type minnows and young-of-the-year larger fish species like salmon fry all depend on remaining hidden and as inconspicuous as possible in order to survive. Predatory fish know that prey items often blend in with their surroundings. This becomes obvious when you try and present a big gaudy streamer to a trout or a similar species that is used to feeding on dull colored minnows etc. You will often be rejected, if in fact you see a reaction from the fish at all. More often than not, less is more when imitating small fish.
Baitfish are often almost transparent in the water.
This allows them to pick up the color of their surrounds and appear to be part of the overall scheme of things.

This fly hopefully follows along in that same vein.
It is very sparse, the pearl flashabou will reflect light grabbing a fishes attention, however not to the extent a huge stack of bucktail or holographic flashabou would. This fly was developed mostly to imitate immature salmon.

Materials List

Hook: #10 curved shank hopper hook inverted
Thread: gray 8/0
Body: flashabou
Underwing: flashabou
Overwing: ice wing fiber
Head: Dubbed ice wing fiber
Eyes: 3D stick on eyes

LETS GET TYING!!

Step 1

Insert the hook into the vise and wrap the shank with thread

Step 2

Tie in a length of flashabou at the end of the hook shank

Step 3

Tightly wrap the flashabou forward and tie it off near the head. Take the tag and fold it over creating a wing. Tie it down well

Step a4

I'm using ice wing fiber by hareline. It says it's black but it has a good amount of greenish color in it. However just about any long length sparkly fiber will work

Step 4

Select a small length of the wing material and tie it in. Make sure it extends a little ways off the end of the hook

Step 5

Take some more of the fiber and dub it onto the thread. Wrap it up creating a ball shaped head. If it looks too big you can trim it off a little before we put on the eyes

Step 6

Apply a set of eyes using fletch tite cement. It's available at most sporting goods stores that sell bow hunting equipment

Finished fly!!!
