THE BLEEDING CORSAIR PIKE FLY

Blood. The word sends chills up the spines of some. Seeing blood of course means you’ve cut yourself, or are in some way injured. Lets face it, when you bleed, that’s bad. Fish don’t really understand the how or why, but they know too that it’s bad. A basic instinct in predatory fish is to cull the weak, injured, and sick. Quick, reactive moves are also a sign of trouble in the animal world. When injured fish zip and dive it often results in a flashy display of reflective scales etc. This fly covers both of those aspects well; red, bloody krystal flash and silver flashabou. Pike especially seem to like those traits. Give the fly a try and see for yourself!

MATERIALS LIST

Hook: big! I’m using a stainless 3/0

Thread: light colored 3/0

Tail flash: silver/green/black flashabou

Tail: Magnum rabbit strip

Side-flash: Red krystal flash

Head: Corsair tubing(more below)

Eye’s: 7/32” plastic dome eyes

LETS GET BUSY!!

Step 1- Insert the hook into the vice and coat the shank with thread

Step 2- Select a clump of flashabou about 3 times the length of the shank

Step 3- Tie in a piece of rabbit strip about the same length as the flash

Step 4- Tie the side flash in. Tie in one side, then pull the long end of the flash around to the other side.

Step 5- Take the corsair tubing and tie it in near the eye. When the tubing is tied in, tie off the thread and glue it good.

Step 6a- when you have the tubing tied in, and the glue is dry, push it back over itself.

Step 6b- Push it back over till the end touches the rabbit and then trim it off.

Step 6c- Start the thread again and tie under the tips of the corsair tubing.

Step 7- Wrap a nice even head on the fly and tie it off.

Step 8- You can take a marker and give the fly a lateral line.

Step 9- Use some fletch tite to glue on the eyes. You might have to squirt a little inside the tubing first, then put the eyes on.

Step 10(not shown)- It would be a good idea to give the fly a coat of epoxy. I chose not to show it here, however it protects it well and keeps the eye on, and prevent fish from picking up the tubing with their teeth.

Corsair is a tubing used in electrical circles. It’s tough to find. However it makes an excellent tying material.
