CHINOOK SALMON

Chinook, also known as King salmon, grow biggest in the Kenai River. The Alaskan record is 97 lbs 4 oz; a commercial fishing boat caught a 126 pounder near Petersburg. It is recognized by black spots on its back, dorsal fin and both lobes of the caudal fin. King's teeth emerge from a black gum-line. Most Kings return to spawn in the fourth or fifth year. Their life span vary from 2 to 8 years. They enter the lower peninsula streams around mid-May and spawn between July and September; females lay around 3,000 to 14,000 eggs; they all die after spawning. King salmon eat mostly herring, Sand lance, squids and few rockfish.
