CHUM SALMON

The Chum, or so called "Dog" salmon average 10 to 18 pounds and reach up to 40 inches in length; State record is 32 lbs. They are metallic blue above, silver below, and have no spots. Other distinctions are the smooth first arch of the gill racked and the male's front teeth larger than other salmon. Their spawning colors are very distinct with green, black and red vertical stripe along the body. Chums return to spawn in fall after 3, 4 or 5 years at sea and do not travel very far inland; they all die after spawning.
