COHO SALMON The silver salmon grow to nearly 39 inches. The Alaska record being 26 lbs at 35 inches. The Coho has black spots, confined to the back and upper lobe of the caudal fin only. They differ from kings in that the teeth emerge from a light gum line, pale white. Their life span is around 5 years, but most return after 2 to 3 years. They enter freshwater around mid-August through early October and spawn through October and November; females lay around 2,400 and 4,500 eggs. They will all die after spawning. Silvers eat herrings, Sand lance, squid and other fish.
