DOLLY VARDEN Dollies reach lengths up to 36 inches. The Alaska record is 19 lbs 12 oz. They have light spots on a dark bronze background and in fresh water may exhibit pale yellow spots on the back and red to orange spots on the sides during spawning time. Commonly called a trout, but more accurately a char, Dolly Varden may be taken on single salmon eggs and small lures when in the river. Most residents are between 7 to 9 inches but the mature spawning Dollies average 15 to 22 inches. They may migrate to salt water at any given time in search of food and return to the river in fall to spawn between September and October and spend their winter in fresh water lakes. Dollies usually travel up and down their native river for food but may occasionally run up another rivers. They mature after 4 to 5 years. and will spawn several time in their native gravel ground, but not every year. The general life span is around 10 to 11 years, but occasionally will extend up to 18 years.
