SOCKEYE SALMON The red salmon, also known as the Sockeye, grows up to 33 inches. The Alaska record is 16 lbs and 31 inches. They are recognized by closely spaced gill rakes, by fine black speckling on the back and no spot on the caudal fin. Sockeye spend 2 to 5 years in the ocean before returning to their home streams to spawn. They eat mostly zooplankton, amphipods, and few small fish. They enter fresh water from late May to mid-August. Spawning occurs in late summer and in autumn. They mature generally after 3 to 5 years and females produce 2,000 to 4,500 eggs. They all die after spawning. Angling is restricted to fly fishing to certain areas of the Kenai River and the Russian River. Sizes of the hook are also regulated. Be aware of the fishing rules of your fishing area.
