STEELHEAD The steelhead is one of the most prized sport fish on the west coast. It obtains lengths to 45 inches. The Alaska record is 42 lb 3 oz. They are distinguished from Salmon by the spotting on the back and side below the lateral line, spotting on both lobes of the caudal fin and some spotting on the anal fin. Steelhead have a distinctive white anterior of the mouth. Not all steelhead die after spawning as the Pacific salmon do. Some may spawn as many as three to five time in a lifetime. They begin entering fresh water in May for the first run and mid-August for the second run and may be fished as long as the river remains ice free. They spawn between March and May.
